Life Force in Action

Life breeds more life, complicates life, creates life and subsumes life.

Its not all about the DNA- but what happens is important too.

Life is one of the greatest forces on this planet. An understanding of how DNA acts in controlling cell growth and replication is an achievement that is essential to allow humanity to sit more comfortably within its environment.

Bacterial biomolecule factories; Biofilms in disease/pollution and industrial production; agricultural production via plants, and esoteric possibilities such as tree ships in our oceans or beckon. Cellular immortality must precede macro organism immortality. So we need to understand the mechanisms that make cells age and die. It is by controlling cell expression and growth  (enabled by the DNA coding), that our goals can be achieved.

Interestingly some authors propose that ageing of macro organisms may well not be predominately DNA based in our world. The  Paill disease model suggest that it is disease that causes cancer, ageing and wearing out effects predominately.

The same author makes a claim that “Darwinian evolution is bullshit”. Evolution does not occur in a monogenic series of selection processes dominated by nature and random events. Evolution as a concept has room for both “Acts of  God”, as well as the random acts of “Nature and Science”. The theory is that macro organism evolution is driven by “gene segment” changes. These either work conferring substantial advantages to the new organism or impose death upon the organism. There is little in between. The example of the Paill website gives the example of the evolution of a fruitcake from a sponge cake. There is very little evidence that there are thousands of intermediate stages in humanity as older humans (sponge cakes) evolved into modern humans (fruitcake).

The process occurs as far as we can tell from the evidence of history and archaeology in a single quick step. One day there are basic creatures in existence. The next day something magical is born. The odds are heavily against any changes being an advantage or successful. So these changes occur only across the backdrop of thousands to millions of years.

But return to example of the tree ship. Being able to control mangrove cell growth may well generate a self-repairing oceangoing vessel, capable of surviving in the open ocean. Human technology will be required to support the new life form. Human technology will be required to protect and enhance the new lifeforms. Human technology will enhance the capabilities of the new life form. But it is the basic DNA/life pattern which forms the base matrix of what is required to colonise and maintain humanity within the hostile environment of the oceans.

Kinkajou Tells It True

Kinkajou Tells You What Really Happened. The Truth Is Out There!

We have a long way to go before we can make plants set up counter current distribution systems for fluids, nutrients and chemicals in a ship that we have shaped from a tree. To survive underwater for periods of time demands the ability to feed nutrients and especially oxygen to the living structure of the “tree-ship”. We need to understand the DNA and how we can enhance the DNA before we can even look at our goals. If our oceangoing vessels must submerge to avoid storms, how do you engineer oxygen to reach the cell mass of our tree ship organism?

The examples of cloning and cell growth from science fiction start with the example of Col McQueen of the Angry Angels, (Space Above And Beyond). I don’t think we’ll ever see an example of bio engineering on this scale. Self-replicating human beings are far cheaper and easier to deploy and use. We have an excess of people already on this planet. It is far cheaper to mine resources you already have that to create new ones in general. It is an interesting proposal though.

The North Clones The SigmaPsiNorth Clones

Michael Swan wick’s book (Vacuum Flowers) featuring Rebel Elizabeth Mudlark showcases a humanity ascendant in the biological sciences. Biology is the tool by which humanity has conquered the solar system. Biology allows the conquest of disease. For example, people living in space low gravity environments commonly face problems with calcium loss from bones. The solution in this book is to colonise human bones with a coral like organism which deposits calcium the bones with its death. When I first tried to read as book, I found it very fast and bizarre. It is only with time and experience that I have come to realise how truly awesome and ground breaking many of the biological inventions is in this book really are.

The book "Genesis Quest" showcases a new alien species recreating humanity. It is the same scenario is created in the movie series “Species”. However the aliens like us, and there are no really bad guys.

The final example shows lymphocytes achieving sentience through the medium of DNA memory. They set up their own civilisation at a much faster pace of life than that which exists in the human macro organism. They wreak havoc. They wreak changes. They come to realise that they are responsible for their home and need to manage it carefully. Personally I feel that it is a crime against humanity to create DNA segments for use as “memory” when it is possible that these DNA segments could by sheer coincidence possibly create inimical organisms. DNA is precious because it is the coding of life. It must remain the coding of life. It Must not be used for industrial processes.

Another book called “Geta” by Donald Kingsbury showcases the problems in biology faced by human colonists on a on an unfriendly world. The world in which they find themselves has not developed favouring humanity. Human life clings by a thread and slowly adapts to the New World. The engineering of inimical organisms such as a beetle capable of eating human wheat gives an example of what an eco-crime may be. It gives as a basis for judging the perpetrators of such crimes as well.

The concept of eco-crime arises very strongly from a book by Paoli Bacigalupi called "The Windup Girl". In this world corporations control the planet through their criminal modification of disease and plants to underscore profits derived from agricultural patents. The existence of the Cheshire cats which blend in with their environment is an interesting example of a bio engineering adaptation gone wrong. As Cheshire cats are a dominant inherited DNA change, they wipe out the existence of normal cats. All the cats in the world are replaced by an insidious and successful chameleon like predator, destroying even more native life across the planet.

The book gives evidence that single individuals can make incredible steps on our understanding of the world. However I believe in the long run is teams of people working together that are most important in introducing breakthroughs. So the world that exists arises from the initiatives of a few, but the persistent work of many. I think the” Windup Girl” is unlikely to be a future we will ever see.

Aspects of Brisbane that suggest themselves from the technologies of cloning and cell growth:

Plant nurseries and aquaria come to mind.

Many farms have breeding programs for cattle and horses and sheep. I know some people who undertake farm tours to see how farms work and how breeding and DNA is used to control biology. Visit the Brisbane Ekka: in August each year. Have a look at the cattle, the sheep and the animals. Raising plants and animals is very important in many aspects of our world. There are many people whose whole lives are based on this activity.

If you want to do something really interesting, visit the dog park at Currumbin /Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. The breeds of dogs are usually very much in evidence. People and dogs are an awesome mix. In this little area is an absolute gem whether you have a dog or not. You can enjoy other people’s dogs even if you do not have your own with you.

  • Isaac Asimov (Foundation and Earth) and David Brin (Foundation’s Triumph) mention the concept of human virus that activates at puberty causing a subtle distortion of human motivation and drive, supposedly to improve the sociability of the human species, enabling it to colonise the galaxy.

  • David Brin: Star Tide Rising. The book has a large theory of genetic based themes looking at the concept of uplift. Uplift is the gene engineering of a simpler biological entity into a more intelligent entity capable of dealing with the tools and products of civilisation. The interesting example here of cloning and cell growth as opposed to DNA engineering is that of the Jophur. These sophonts essentially become completely new species through the integration of a “command torus” into their combination structures. The peaceful Traeki in effect become the warlike aggressive Jophur.

  • Thomas Harlan: Wasteland of Flint. Here we are faced with cell growth control but with nano bots not biological organisms. The nano-bots are capable of subsuming biologicals: in effect taking over and copying many of the functions. I suppose an example of cell growth control in the mechanical world.

  • Robert Heinlein: Time Enough for Love. A computer gene crafts a repository for her intelligence in human form, borrowing chromosomes from the most suitable donors. However, in terms of cell growth control, it is the ability to code information from the computer into the newborn being that is the most interesting in terms of this field of science.

  • Anne McCaffrey: The White Dragon. To survive the appearance of “thread”, humanity gene engineers the dragons from fire lizards on their new home. The book highlights the difference between genetics: growing a fire lizard and cell growth control: growing an intelligent species capable of cooperating with and functioning with humans.

  • Vernor Vinge: A Deepness In The Sky. This author creates a new eerie and in fact disturbing concept. Human brain functions can be modified through the use of nano bots programmed by MRI machines. The humans become “focused”. The promise in pain of this tool is explored. Humans can achieve so much more. Humans can be trapped and enslaved so much longer. Humans can be abused.
The eeriness arises from the fact that it seems almost doable today.

KinkajouKinkajou : Clever New Applications:

  • Seagoing mangrove “tree” ships able to survive in the open ocean promised to be the most civilisation changing innovation. If we can colonise the oceans, the planet truly becomes ours.

  • The “bootstrap” chromosome will allow the modification or destruction of countless organisms on the planet towards a human optimised environment. Disease vectors can be made immune to diseases they carry. Failing life forms can be saved from extinction. Human research and knowledge could well design and integrate gene segments into organisms, surpassing nature’s own engineering capacity. For example, a talking dog could become a reality.

  • Enabling animals and humans to interface with computer systems. By enabling the growth of an interface, information or instructions can be passed on in new ways.

  • Micro warriors: Taking the concept of creating interfaces between biological and silicon based systems, and combining this with growth engineered lifeforms, creates an entire new frontline for wars of the future. One day the outcome of war at the micro level may well underwrite the outcome of war at the macro level. One cannot succeed at the level of the larger organism (e.g. a human), unless one dominates the microscopic world. Imagine a flea as a samurai carrying a sword of Clostridial endotoxin killing enemy soldiers.
